San José and Arenal Volcano: The First Days

After a twelve-hour flight, I landed in San José, the capital. A private driver was waiting for me, which meant I reached my hotel stress-free despite the jet lag.

In San José, I discovered the Central Market and its local specialties (gallo pinto remains a standout memory), the National Theatre, a true architectural gem, and a first immersion in Costa Rican culture thanks to a private guide.

From there, on to Arenal Volcano, one of the highlights of the trip: a hike around the volcano followed by a swim in natural hot springs, a night at an eco-responsible lodge overlooking the jungle, and a first encounter with local wildlife — sloths, toucans, and howler monkeys. Immersed in the Jungle at Monteverde

Next, on to Monteverde, famous for its cloud forest. This is where I experienced one of the most immersive moments of the trip.

Standout experiences in Monteverde:

•      Zip-lining above the canopy, for guaranteed thrills

•      A night walk with a naturalist guide to observe nocturnal wildlife

•      Meeting a local community and gaining a deeper understanding of Costa Rican culture

Spotting a resplendent quetzal, the sacred bird of the Maya, remains one of the most magical moments of the entire trip.

Paradise Beaches at Manuel Antonio

After the mountain adventure, on to the Pacific coast for a few days of relaxation at Manuel Antonio.

Unforgettable moments on the coast:

•      Exploring Manuel Antonio National Park, spotting capuchin monkeys and iguanas

•      Swimming at paradise-like, nearly deserted beaches

•      A kayak trip through the mangroves to observe crocodiles and exotic birds

•      Sunset on a private catamaran, with dolphins in the background

Snorkeling at Isla Tortuga, an island with crystal-clear water, remains one of the true highlights of this stay.

A Homestay at a Costa Rican Finca

To end the trip on a high note, Sunshine Adventures suggested an immersive homestay experience at a finca — an organic farm.
