When to Go? A Season-by-Season Guide to the Best Destinations

By Dario Mangano

Choosing the right destination is one thing; choosing the right time is another. The same country can be ideal in April and disappointing in August: monsoon rains, extreme heat, school-holiday crowds, or roads closed by snow. Here is a season-by-season guide to traveling at the best time.

The periods given are general guidelines: the climate varies from year to year, and adjusting the dates to your priorities is precisely the role of a tailor-made trip.

Spring (March to May): blossoms and mild weather

Spring brings pleasant temperatures and landscapes in full transformation.

•      Japan: the cherry blossom season, generally from late March to early April depending on the region, makes this one of the most sought-after periods of the year, so booking early is essential

•      Morocco: mild temperatures before the summer heat, ideal for wandering the medinas, hiking in the Atlas, or heading into the desert

Summer (June to August): wide open spaces and long days

Summer opens access to regions that are out of reach the rest of the year.

•      Iceland: the interior roads are open and the days are very long, with a sun that barely sets

•      Peru: the dry season in the Andes offers the best conditions for hiking and visiting Inca sites, but it is also the busiest time of year

Autumn (September to November): golden light and dry seasons

Autumn marks the start of the best period for several faraway destinations.

•      Namibia: the dry season concentrates wildlife around waterholes, under clear skies and spectacular starry nights

•      Rajasthan: from October, the monsoon is over and the heat becomes bearable, with the start of the festival season and its large markets

Winter (December to February): sunshine and the Southern dry seasons

When Europe is under cover, several tropical destinations are at their best.

•      Costa Rica: the dry season, from roughly December to April, brings sunny weather, particularly on the Pacific coast

•      Thailand: from November to February, the dry season is cooler and more pleasant, ideal for the beaches and islands of the Andaman Sea

Dates aren't everything: shoulder seasons and special cases

Between high and low season, the in-between periods often offer the best compromise: fewer crowds, gentler prices, and a climate that is still favorable. Some destinations also have particularities that change the picture, such as school holidays, local festivals, or seasonal weather events.

This is where tailored support makes all the difference: matching your personal constraints with the climate and tourism calendar of each destination.

The right time is the one that suits you

There is no universal ideal period: it all depends on what you are looking for, whether sunshine, nature, culture, or peace and quiet. Choosing your dates well is already half the success of a trip.
