How to Build the Ideal Itinerary for a Tailor-Made Trip?

By Dario Mangano

A tailor-made itinerary is the ideal opportunity to create a trip fully suited to your interests, your pace, and what you care about most. But how do you plan it well, without forgetting anything or overloading your schedule? Here are our tips for building a balanced, custom itinerary.

Defining the Type of Trip You Want

Before planning an itinerary, it helps to ask the right questions: cultural discovery, adventure and nature, relaxation and wellness, or a food-focused trip? Duration matters too: a short 5- to 7-day getaway favors one region or city, while a trip of three weeks or more allows for exploring several countries.

It's also worth deciding on the trip's format: staying in one place and taking day trips from there, choosing a loop itinerary with multiple stops, or a one-way route to maximize discovery.

Selecting Key Destinations

To choose your stops, it helps to make a list of the places you've always dreamed of, draw inspiration from blogs and videos, and take weather and season into account. It's also a good idea to sort destinations into three categories: must-sees, secondary destinations if time allows, and optional bonus activities.

Estimating the Right Amount of Time for Each Stop

The biggest trap of a tailor-made itinerary is trying to see everything in too little time. As a rule of thumb: two to four days are enough for a lively capital, five to seven days to explore a varied region, and for a road trip, it's best not to exceed 200 to 300 kilometers a day to avoid fatigue.

Optimizing Your Travel Logistics

The choice of transportation depends heavily on the destination: favor direct flights to avoid fatigue, consider the train to enjoy the scenery (especially well suited to Europe or Japan), or check road quality and fuel station availability for a car-based road trip.

Balancing the Schedule Between Highlights and Downtime

Traveling also means taking the time to enjoy the moment. It's best to alternate between dynamic activities (hiking, museums, excursions) and relaxing moments (the beach, a café, a free stroll), rather than stacking visit after visit without a break.

Adapting the Itinerary to Your Budget

A limited budget favors bus or train travel and affordable accommodations, a mid-range budget can include domestic flights and comfortable hotels, while a premium budget opens the door to luxury hotels and private transfers.

Checking Practical Requirements and Formalities

Before departure, it's still essential to check that your passport is valid and whether a visa is required, review vaccination recommendations, arrange internet access (an eSIM or local SIM card), and check current customs regulations.

Building Your Ideal Itinerary

A tailor-made itinerary is a unique adventure, shaped around your own pace. With these tips, it becomes possible to create a smooth, balanced itinerary optimized for a memorable trip.
