The idea behind this itinerary: a driving loop through peninsular Malaysia, in short, contrasting stages. Kuala Lumpur first, then the cool air of the Cameron Highlands, George Town and its street food, the primary forest of Royal Belum, before three days at sea in the Perhentian Islands, and a return marked by the orangutans of Bukit Merah.

01Days 1 to 3
Arrival is simple: car picked up at the airport, a hotel in the heart of the business district a few streets from the Petronas Towers, infinity pool on the roof. Two days to take the capital's measure: the Skybridge walkway between the twin towers, nasi lemak and satay in the streets of Bukit Bintang, the glass-floored deck of the KL Tower, the Thean Hou and Sri Mahamariamman temples, and the green interlude of the Perdana gardens.
02Days 4 to 5
The road climbs in switchbacks toward the cool air of the highlands. In the evening, a colonial lodge with Tudor architecture, set in the hills of Ringlet, serves tea in the garden. The next day, the Mossy Forest unfolds along wooden walkways above 6,500 feet, among mosses, lichens, and giant ferns, before the Boh plantation: a tour of the factory, then a cup at the panoramic café, facing hillsides of tea.
03Days 6 to 7
From the mountains to the shores of Penang island: George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, blends colonial facades and street art. In the evening, head for the Red Garden Food Paradise for char kway teow or a steaming laksa. The next day, a beach morning at Batu Ferringhi, then the stilt houses of the Clan Jetties and the murals of Ernest Zacharevic, including his famous children on a bicycle.
04Day 8
An early start toward Gerik, the gateway to Royal Belum, a tropical forest left untouched for more than 130 million years. By boat across Lake Temenggor, among jungle-covered islands, then on the trails with a guide: rhinoceros hornbills among more than 300 bird species, butterflies and, with some luck, the rafflesia, the largest flower on earth. A quiet night, lulled by the forest.
05Days 9 to 11
At Kuala Besut, the car stays behind: a speedboat races to Perhentian Besar, where the resort opens straight onto its beach and reef. Three days on island time: mask and snorkel right from the sand, turtles and harmless small reef sharks at Shark Point and Turtle Bay, the quiet bay of Teluk Dalam, jungle trails to hidden coves, then a dinner of grilled seafood on the beach.
06Days 12 to 13
Back to the mainland by boat, then a stop at Bukit Merah: on its sanctuary island, a foundation rehabilitates orangutans, observed from walkways at a respectful distance. A final night in Kuala Lumpur, with a drink on a rooftop or in the bustle of Changkat Bukit Bintang. The next day, the car is returned at Kuala Lumpur International Airport before the flight home to Geneva, mind at ease, journal full.
