01Days 1 to 2
You arrive at night, at a five-star palace hotel on the edge of the Arabian Sea. The next morning, a boat leaves the Colaba waterfront for Elephanta Island: Hindu sanctuaries carved into the rock in the fifth century, including the celebrated three-faced statue of Shiva. Back in the city, the colonial quarters, the bazaars, the astonishing open-air laundry of Dhobi Ghat, then Marine Drive at sundown.
02Days 3 to 4
A domestic flight brings you to the capital, where the driver who will stay at your side for the rest of the journey is waiting. In Old Delhi, threaded by rickshaws: the Jama Masjid mosque, Gandhi's memorial at Raj Ghat, the spice bazaars, then the Qutub Minar, a twelfth-century minaret on the UNESCO list. The afternoon shifts to the broad avenues of New Delhi, from India Gate to the ministry district.
03Days 5 to 6
The road leaves Delhi for the northern countryside, ending at a hotel steps from the Taj Mahal, with a rooftop terrace facing the monument. A first visit at sunset, when the white marble takes on shades of gold and rose; a return at dawn, in the cool silence of morning. Then Agra's Red Fort, residence of the Mughal emperors, and in the evening a table of Mughlai cuisine, heir to the imperial kitchens.
04Days 7 to 8
On the way to Rajasthan, a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned imperial capital, with its monumental 130-foot gate. Then Jaipur, the Pink City: the Amber Fort perched above its valley, the latticed facade of the Hawa Mahal, the City Palace still home to descendants of the royal family, the giant instruments of the Jantar Mantar observatory, then the fabric and jewelry bazaars to finish.
05Days 9 to 10
The road crosses villages and mustard fields to the Blue City. On its promontory, Mehrangarh Fort unfolds painted audience halls, royal apartments, and a Palace of Mirrors glinting with glass and gold leaf; below, the white marble cenotaph of Jaswant Thada. All that remains is to wander the indigo lanes, among artisans' workshops, before dinner on a rooftop terrace facing the illuminated fort.
06Days 11 to 12
Rajasthan turns greener on the road to Udaipur. Halfway, the Jain temple of Ranakpur aligns its 1,444 carved marble columns, each one different, in a rare serenity. Then the City of Lakes: the City Palace overlooking Lake Pichola, a cruise past the Lake Palace, the Jagdish temple and the miniature-painting workshops, and in the evening dinner facing the illuminated palace.
07Days 13 to 14
A domestic flight returns you from Udaipur to Mumbai, where a palace hotel facing the bay hosts the final evening: a free afternoon between designer boutiques and the Arabian Sea shore, a fine dinner, then a drink at the hotel bar overlooking the city lights. In the morning, your driver takes you to the airport; you board the flight home with Rajasthan still filling your thoughts.
